Alexa is one of the most famous web crawler that creates snapshots of the web, using the data it collects to create features and services such as site information that includes traffic rankings, pictures of sites, links pointing to sites, sites that are more similar to the one you are currently viewing and more.
It computes traffic rankings by analyzing the web usage of millions of Alexa toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources. And as the information is being sorted, sifted, anonymized, counted, and computed users gets to see the traffic rankings shown in the Alexa service.
The traffic rank is the combined measure of page views and users. The main Alexa traffic rank is based on a value derived from these two quantities averaged over time, so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users.
In a breaking news, Alexa has announced a new ranking system for the web. That after several months now the new Alexa Rankings System is available.
Developing the aspects of gathering data and information about websites, was the major step Alexa made toward the new system, through surveying and questions from the Alexa’s toolbar users who started to see that the internet and website’s popularity is further more than a sign or an indicator on a toolbar.
A huge confusion has already began, as for users who are concerned about the change in their rankings and which is the right rank from the wrong?!!
“The new rankings should better reflect the interests and surfing habits of the broader population of Web users” Alexa has stated, so the old ranking wasn’t wrong, it was only different. The users’ interests and surfing habits could differ from those of the general population in a number of ways. Alexa’s new system is adjusted for situations in which they could matter.
The new systems basics are:
Improved Methodology: where Alexa is normalizing the traffic from their global panel to provide consistently accurate rankings for all countries.
More Sources: the new system is based on more sources of data to give a better indicator of website popularity.
Better Rankings: the rankings are now an ever better indication of website popularity due to new and improved algorithms.
Finally, Alexa is urging the users to bear up with the new system, as it promised them to see new features, which have all been developed from the same users own reviews and suggestions.
