A tune-up is An adjustment, as of a motor or engine, made to improve working order or efficiency. or a general adjustment to insure operation at peak efficiency.
Widely speaking, A Tune-up provides preventative maintenance, while identifying and replacing worn parts. They ensure that your vehicle will operate at optimal conditions by maintaining the ideal conditions for normal car operation. Neglecting these basic tasks could result in low gas mileage and damage to critical engine components.
Most cars require regularly scheduled tune-ups around every 30,000 miles, and major maintenance at 60,000 miles. Some newer vehicles may not even require a tune-up until 100,000 miles! Check with your manufacturer for what is correct for your vehicle.
You can simply know that it is time for your car to have a tune up,
Hard Starting is the most common form of car trouble. It’s usually due to some unperformed maintenance. If the starter cranks the engine, the electrical system is probably okay. The culprit could be a starting sensor (on fuel injected models) or the choke mechanism (on engines with carburetors). Frequently, starting failure can be traced to an electronic component or a computer controlling the ignition system.
Power Loss: A dirty filter is a common cause of power loss. As noted under “poor gas mileage”, there can be many causes of this condition, most of which can be located with a diagnostic procedure.
Exhaust Odor: The smell of rotten eggs comes from the catalytic converter, part of your car’s emissions-control system. The odor can be due to an engine problem or it can be a sign that your car’s catalytic converter is malfunctioning.
Stalling: This can be caused by incorrect speed adjustments, a malfunctioning sensor or switch, dirty fuel-system parts, worn spark plugs, or other engine deficiencies. To make diagnosis easier, make note of when it happens and advise your technician.

A thorough tune-up will include:
- Replacing the air filter.
- Replacing the fuel filter(s).
- Installing new spark plugs and replacing any worn spark plug wires.
- Inspecting and installing a new distributor cap if one is needed.
- Inspecting and installing a new rotor if the old one has cracks, burning and carbon.
- Inspecting the valve-cover gasket and adjusting the valves (if your car has adjustable valves).
- All fluids checked and topped off.
- A battery check and terminal cleaning, if necessary
