Does Biotechnology really benefits humanity?!

video8.jpgWatch Video

Biotechnology In a modern definition, is related to the genetic information of living organisms, called DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid).

Biotechnology is basically known as the recreation and reinvention of nature. It deals with the manipulation of living organisms in order to make or improve products, enhance plants and animals or generate microorganisms to make human life and the environment better. Biotechnology has been practiced for thousands of years. It dates back to when man first learned how to plant crops or breed animals.

Many people believe that It achieves many benefits for humans and the environment. As It has a relative number of functions for food and agriculture, as well as medicine. An example is the identification and treatment of genetic illnesses, as well as the production of vaccines for diseases. Antibiotics are also considered products of biotechnology. Artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization (IVF) are also forms of biotech practice.

Actually Biotechnology has achieved many developments in our life, the development of breeding and cloning animals, well as cloning in animals. After cloning Dolly the sheep in 1996, proponents of the technology claimed that livestock cloning provided consumers with high quality products. In a later study, a research team was able to produce pigs that have Omega-3 fatty acids. These fats are known to be healthy fats, and help the heart work properly, thus reducing the risk of heart diseases.

With any research, risks always come along with benefits. That is why these genetically modified organisms are evaluated before made available to the public. The practice of Biotechnology is being questioned in connection with ethical and religious implications. Fortunately, there are regulations set by authorities that vary from country to country. Its uses and products should always be safe for human beings.

But now we have to come to a fact that biotechnology and religion don’t necessarily need to compete with each other. It is thought that both sides will coexist better if they understood each other a little more and were more tolerant of their own differences.

  1. I think there’s so many benefits attached to biotechnology, and particularly genetically modified crops. So far, there are no known dangers associated with GM Crops. There is this blog that highlights applications of biotechnology to agriculture. It’s called GMO Africa. Though it’s pro-biotech, it normally highlights so many important things that we don’t know about agricultural biotechnology.
